Nuit Noire
Nuit Noire
French artist Nuit Noire turns anxiety into electronic lullabies, combining intimate songwriting with modular synthesis. Having previously performed as a keyboardist alongside Chien noir, Oré and Mathilde, she now works alone with a self-built modular synth housed inside an old cathode-ray television.
“forteresse” is the final preview of her debut EP, released independently on 6 November 2026. An intimate song about childhood expectations and the fear of disappointing those closest to her, it asks whether we can still be accepted when we refuse to become the person others expect. Nuit Noire explains: "Not fitting into the mold doesn't mean you're failing - it's actually a strength. The chorus "I'm not the person you were expecting me to be", is an admission that I can't change myself for others, but it's not meant to be pessimistic. Quite the opposite: I finally dare to take off the mask, remove my armor, break free from these rules, and embrace who I am in all my imperfection."
Alongside the single comes visualiser directed by Coraline Benetti, the video transforms that conflict into a colourful medieval fairy tale. nuit noire plays both knight and princess, each attempting to fulfil an assigned role before abandoning a burning cardboard castle. The deliberately theatrical, handmade setting exposes the gender stereotypes at the heart of the story.
Developed with French musician and arranger Arthur Genest (Hinsberger), the forteresse EP explores fear, sensitivity and the freedom found in stepping outside the boxes we're expected to occupy. Its visual world, created with photographer and filmmaker Laurie Bisceglia, extends that idea through handmade sets and uncanny fairytale imagery.
