Deep Throat Choir

Deep Throat Choir share new digitally-released 5-track EP titled 3am, available 10th June via Bella Union, following the success of last years second LP In Order to Know You.

3am is in many ways an extension of the larger body of work that made up In Order To Know. These are all songs that have been collaboratively written by the choir, harnessing a richer and more extensive instrumentation than the first record. This grouping of songs sits together as a sunnier and brighter collection, better suited for the warmer months. Two of them have big brass moments for which the choir enlisted players from the London-based all-female latin-influenced band, Collectiva.

Opening track “Witches” was written shortly after the women’s marches of 2017, where the phrase “We are the grand-daughters of the witches you weren’t able to burn”, was emblazoned across many a placard. The lyrics, inspired by the words of Angela Davis, urge towards a deep and long commitment to change; to visioning, imagining, and pushing towards a future beyond our own lifespans.

Second track “BSTF” was written by choir member Nouria Bah who writes: “BSTF (Bad Stop The Feeling) is a song where I tried to turn bad feelings into a catchy tune. It’s also about turning to the internet to distract yourself, listening to music from a time when I was younger, hence the references to 90s artists. An ode to sadness, procrastination and nostalgia, with lots of horns.

Hey Sister” is one of the tracks from the Simian Mobile Disco x Deep Throat Choir collaboration, Murmurations. Here we see the choir reimagine the song with a much more acoustic sound, harnessing glockenspiels, horns, and strings whilst honouring the drive of the original dance track.

Closing track “Joyful” is another song to come out of the collective’s Prah residency in Margate. Nat hummed the lead melody atop an improvised moment, which later evolved into a song about not yet having the courage to say “I love you” to somebody, and waiting until they are asleep to do so.
