Alice Boman

Swedish songwriter Alice Boman shares new single Maybe taken from forthcoming album The Space Between due 21st Oct via Play It Again Sam, featuring guest appearance from Perfume Genius.

Talking about the latest single Boman comments: "I love how this song turned out. How it sounds. Because even though it’s kind of a sad song, about dealing with the realisation that something you want is never going to happen, it still has a lightness to it. And I really appreciate contrasts like that. How opening up to one feeling can evoke another one and then exist at the same time.

"I also love the feeling of Castor’s video and I think it accompanies the song so well. The melancholy. To me it makes it feel more real and palpable somehow."

The video footage was found by filmmaker Castor, who says of the video: “Almost 10 years ago I stumbled upon a small abandoned cabin in the woods in the south of Sweden. The place was turned upside down, and in the debris I found some old 8mm film tapes marked with locations from all over the world. Once home, I borrowed a projector and recorded the 27 minutes worth of film on the roll marked “Canada”. On it there’s some footage in front of a cinema with titles that premiered back in 1973 making the footage almost 50 years old by now. In a short sequence there's a glimpse of a gravestone with a Swedish name, Edwin, who passed in 1958. I decided to investigate that further and found the stone to be located in the small town of Spalding, Canada.

I finally managed to reach one of the man's grandsons and I sent the footage for him and his siblings to watch. And there they were, as kids, running around their family home, which is still in their possession. The photographer is remembered as Irene, a long-distance relative from Storuman in Sweden, who passed away in the early 90’s.

30 years after her passing Irene touched the hearts of the ones she captured on her camera that one time back in the early 70's and I bet she will touch a few more in Alice’s lovely “Maybe”. Irene is shown in the last frames of this video. Rest in peace.
