Perlee
Berlin based duo Perlee comprised of Irish singers, songwriters Saramai Leech and Cormac O’ Keeffe release new EP Half Seen Figure.
The latest collection of tracks started as recordings made in the remote countryside of Kells Co. Meath Ireland and then experimented on in their own studio in Berlin with vocals, guitar parts, synths, samples and finally remixed during lockdown. The outcome is a tender batch of beautifully constructed experimental folk tracks with breezy vocals and floating melodies played out over the synths and guitars for a hazy summery ethereal soundtrack.
Reflecting on the tracks included on the EP Saramai starts with Slow Your Eyes by saying, “So much of life is spent on screens now and this song was born out of the idea that when we use screens we are like mirrors reflecting back what we see. But, when we relate directly with life we become more like crystals, prisms that refract the light into colours. It's a modern prayer of sorts, for folks, myself included, to have agency, to engage and change their world off screen.
Sticky Blood deals with themes of addiction and the pain of watching a friend lose a battle with substance. It's painful to watch someone make bad choices and to be on the sidelines unable to intervene.
Bird and the Statue was inspired in part by Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince. It's about a statue and bird that fall in love but it's doomed to fail. But, their love is real, eternal and impossibly big. We wanted it to feel epic and stoic. Also we wanted it to feel like a fairytale whispered in your ear at bedtime.”
