Kate E Lake
Glasgwegian singer, songwriter and pianist Kate e Lake shares debut EP Roam.
Citing influences ranging from Agnes Obel and Nils Frahm to Julia Houlter, Kate e Lake draws the listener in with atmospheric vocals, choral sounds and dense harmonies, along with intricate piano parts. Kate says “I wanted to make music that balances something ethereal with a sense of vitality or drive”.
The EP’s lead single ' Neon Lights' was inspired by travelling through new cities, and the feelings of being on the outside that sometimes linger, even after coming home. She wrote this shortly after moving back to Glasgow after a period of living away.
The second single ‘ Sparks’ was born of frustration. She says, “ It took me some time to get round to recording this EP. A classical background helps in lots of ways; getting around the piano, writing harmonies and things like that. But putting my own material out there, while ultimately freeing, was also new kind of vulnerability for me to get my head around.” Having her wee girl last year gave her the focus she needed. Kate says “I want it to be normal for her to feel nervous or scared, and do the thing she wants to do anyway”.
