Mima Merrow
Glasgow based musician Mima Merrow releases new single Freckles Ahead of the release of her debut EP ‘Good Grief’, due 4th December 2020.
Originally from Northern Ireland Mima’s Celtic accent shines through with reflective vocals and spokenword blended together for a unique ethereal alt folk. Her thoughtful lyricism is brought to the fore through intimacy, pain and honesty backed by a tender piano line creating a stark beauty which flows throughout Freckles marking a stunning first glimpse at the upcoming EP.
“This track is a search for strength in the midst of grief” explains Mima. “It’s that moment when we realise we are made of ancient stardust and all we need can be found in our bodies. Growing up in a place where your whole self could be, at once, reduced down to the minutiae of happenstance and conflated into rituals so generic they feel meaningless, space to figure yourself out can be hard to come by. This track looks at that emptiness and how to find connection.”
The single is accompanied with a video matching the beauty of Freckles which Mima explains 'I asked the artist Freya Gilles to take the image of tree roots as a concept for the music video. One of the key themes in Freckles is a longing for the stories and wisdom from my ancestors and the grief of not having some of them. However, more and more I am beginning to understand that these things don't need to be given to us, they are in our bones and they are in nature. I love trees. I love watching them change in the seasons and I love imagining all the things they have seen and heard. They are wise and they tell you stories if you pay attention. So she took those ideas and made this piece of art. My favourite thing about it is that just when an image is starting to take shape, it disappears under another layer of paint and that playfulness and mystery is something I like to do with my music. She also did the artwork for the EP Good Grief and it's truly beautiful.
