Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business
Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business release new single Woman Is A Word, a cover of alt-R&B singer Empress Of released via Lost Map Records as part of PostMap Club subscription service as well as digitally.
Following the bands first release for the label last year, Woman Is A Word is the latest in a series of new releases by JMMB planned for 2021, with debut EP due for release this summer talking about the track Jenny explains: “I’m always hunting for mantras, earworms and hooks that I can drench my vocal chords in, making sure there are powerful phrases locked in my muscle memory, When I’m at a loss for words, I reach for those things. When I’m up against power dynamics that try to reinforce boring tropes of gender or undermine my own self-knowledge, I need a groove to settle into that reminds me ‘I’m only an image of what you see.’ Empress Of’s song offered me that groove and I felt compelled to rearrange her song as a way of meditating. Covering this song felt like an act of building resilience for those moments when I feel like I just don’t know how to fight anymore.
“I often think about how vast our experiences of both gender and desire could be if we acted like all humans deserve dignity, freedom to self-determine, and to be the boss of their own bodies! This tune acts as a kind of escape from the dominant narratives that try to control everyone for the sake of the status quo which is, let’s be honest, not working. My version of this song had to start and end with voices, as a way of communally digesting the words and focussing on the sound that comes straight up out of our feminised bodies. That was the guiding principle of the composition.”
